Summary: The vitreous body is a structure which can create some difficulties in accurate diagnosis. There are several non-invasive methods of vitreous body examination which are complementary to each other. The past history is the first very important data (onset of the disease, character, visual acuity outcome) permits to orientate the clinical evaluation. The use of optical methods in the examination of vitreous body (slit-lamp, indirect ophthalmoscopy with biomicroscopy and condensing lenses, biomicroscopy and triple mirror) lead to more objective evaluation of partient?s complains. The role of ultrasounds and optical laser interferometry (ptical coherence tomography ? OCT) in vitreous body examination is widely discussed in part II. The registration of observed findings can be managed by patient himself using Litwin method. The pathological structures found during clinical examinations (i. e. slit-lamp, indirect ophthalmoscopy) have to be registrated too. The photographic methods presented here like photographic version of slit-lamp and fundus camera can documentate the images seen during rutine evaluation of vitreous body. The accurate registration of pathologic findings permiting the observation and comparison of the images from different methods of examination, helps in right diagnosis, evaluation of natural history or effects of used therapy.
