Blue Light Filter in Artificial Intraocular Lenses – Protective Function and Importance

Summary: The use of blue light filtering intraocular lenses is an essential element of ophthalmic surgery nowadays. In addition to its fundamental function – imitation the properties of the natural lens – their protective function into posterior pole of the eye has been proven, mainly by preventing the development and progression of age-related macular degeneration. This observation is important mainly from an epidemiological point of view, given the fact that age-related macular degeneration remains the most common cause of blindness in developed countries and the amount of affected by the disease is gradually increasing. The yellow chromophore contained in the lens allows the absorption of harmful blue light waves. It has been proven that it increases the macular pigment optical density and protects the living pigment epithelium cells due to protection of DNA from oxidative and inflammatory damage. In addition, it has been shown that in group of age-related macular degeneration patients after cataract operation, blue light filtering intraocular lenses significantly inhibit the progression of geographic atrophy in dry AMD. In addition the blue light filtering intraocular lenses provide the reduction of sensitivity to glare, faster return after the glare efficiency, improve visual function and the impact on the reduction of cell proliferation uveal melanoma. Taking into consideration all the protective action of blue light filtering intraocular lenses they are superior to only UV blocking intraocular lenses. In most reports correct perception of  colors, scotopic vision and circadian rhythm of patient with blue light filtering intraocular lenses is not significantly different to those without blue light filter intraocular lenses.
