Usefulness of the Optical Coherence Tomography in the Choroidal Metastases Follow-up

Summary: Optical coherence tomography was introduced and improved during last two decades. This exam allows in vivo, non-invasive ocular structures’ assessment. It is useful in the wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, vitreoretinal interface diseases (vitreoretinal traction, macular hole, epiretinal membrane), diabetic macular edema, central serous choroidopathy. Clinical observations suggest that it can be useful in diagnostic of another diseases in posterior region, for example intraocular tumors. Typically in such cases, clinical evaluation, A and B-projection ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance are used. However, it is difficult to detect very small changes in the early stages using ultrasonography. Furthermore, angiography is an invasive method, and computed tomography or magnetic resonance are expensive and poorly available in a daily practice.
The aim of the study is to demonstrate usefulness of optical coherence tomography in the diagnostic and follow-up of eye tumors secondary to other neoplasms. It is shown using two examples of patients with secondary retinal detachment.
In the presented cases, both ophthalmic, including ultrasonography and optical coherence tomography, and oncological diagnostic were performed. Diagnosis of the breast cancer in the first case and of the myeloid leukaemia in the second were done. We observed regression of exudative retinal detachment in response to chemotherapy, which was documented in optical coherence tomography.
Conclusion: optical coherence tomography is helpful in diagnostic of choroidal metastases, the assessment of the treatment results and evaluation of the visual function prognosis.
