Summary: Anatomically and developmentally, the retina is known as an extension of the central nervous system; it consists of retinal ganglion cells, the axons of which form the optic nerve, whose fibres are, in effect, central nervous system axons. Subtle neural changes in the retina may reflect the pathological degeneration in the brain during the disease process, such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. Non-invasive imaging methods of retinal tissue can be conducted quickly and automatically at low cost by using optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography. Those methods have a good potential to serve as a tool for early and massive screening of chronic neurodegenerative diseases in the older patient.
