Summary: Photodynamic therapy has been shown to be effective in helping to prevent further vision loss in patients affected by exudative (wet) macular degeneration. Photodynamic therapy does not use heat, so it does not cause damage, and procedure can be repeated as many times as necessary based on patients ocular condition. BPD-MA medicine is injected intravenously. Medicine is then picked up by blood lipoproteins, which are taken up specifically by the abnormal blood vessels in the retina. Next a beam of red laser light is aimed into the eye, activates the drug, which results in the singlet oxygen and free radicals formation that can lead to vascular endothelial cellular damage, platelet aggregation, thrombosis, and CNV occlusion within treated area. The results of a multi-center phase IIIb randomized placebo-controlled study confirmed the benefits of therapy in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization.
