Summary: Shaken baby syndrome is non-accidental head trauma in infants and small children leading most commonly to serious injures and death. This injures may result from impact or shaking or a combination of these mechanisms. These mechanism cause the child’s head to undergo acceleration/ deceleration movements, which may create inertial movement of the brain within the cranial compartment. Shaking an infant is usually severe and repetitive.
Clinical symptoms are characteristic and include subdural and/ or subarachnoid hemorrhages, brain injures, and retinal hemorrhages. Ophthalmologists play a key role in the diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome. Detailed description of the retinal hemorrhages and documentation are critical to diagnosis. Outcome of treatment is largely dependent on a devastation of the brain and retina.
