Treatment and Prevention of Retinopathy of Prematurity in the Medical Program of The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation

Summary: The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation has been leading a nationwide medical program for retinopathy of prematurity for many years.
The aim of the work is to present the results of the previous action of Foundation in favour of premature infants, in the prevention and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.
Material and Methods: On the basis of the reporting surveys submitted annually by the users of the equipment donated by The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation, the occurrence of retinopathy of prematurity in Poland and the results of treatment of this disease were discussed.
Results: Between the years 2001–2018 Foundation purchased various modern ophthalmic units for diagnosis and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity for medical institutions across the country. Using this equipment over 241 000 prematurity babies were examined. ROP in various stages was diagnosed in 41 000 of individuals. Diode laser photocoagulation of the retina was performed in over 10 000 infants. A regression of the disease after treatment was obtained in 9832 children.
Conclusions: The medical program conducted by The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation enables realisation of the systemic and effective ophthalmological care of premature babies with ROP in the scale of the country, in compliance with obligatory standards.
