Summary: Congenital anomalies of the optic disc are fortunately rare, and in many cases either unilateral or asymmetrical involvement means that functional vision is not significantly impaired. Congenital optic nerve malformations comprise a heterogeneous group that has been classified on the basis of morphology, and presence of an anomalous tissue at the optic disc level and cup shape. Congenital anomalies of the eye account for one of the most common causes of visual impairment in children. The importance of identifying these anomalies lies not only in determining the cause and level of visual impairment, but also in looking for associated treatable or life threatening systemic conditions.
