Summary: The Swedish Cataract Register was initiated in 1992. The database as of today contains information on more than 500 000 cataract operations. More than 95% of all surgeries in the country are included in the register. The data base gives continuously a description of the national scene of cataract surgery when it comes to quantity as well as quality. For the participating clinics and surgeons it also offers the possibilities of bench marking. From the register some thirty scientific articles have been published and some of the conclusions will be presented concerning quality of life and cataract surgery. The Swedish Register for Corneal Transplants was started in 1996 and covers the pre-, peri- and postoperative parameters as well as the final outcome measured two years postoperatively. The data base contains information from 5000 corneal transplants as of today. Examples will show how this type of register is of benefit both for the patients and the surgeons. Both registers are part of Eyenet Sweden www. eyenetsweden. se where more information can be found.
