Summary: Amniotic membrane (AM) is widely used to treat persistent corneal epithelium defects. It consists of three layers: single epithelial layer, thick basement membrane and avascular stroma. AM suppress inflammation, fibrosis, neovascularization and pain. It works as a matrix for corneal epithelium. There are lot of studies describing AM transplantations for ocular surface defects (persistent epithelial defect, sterile corneal ulceration, partial limbal stem cells deficiency, conjunctival lesions surgery) and ex vivo cultivation and expansion of limbal epithelial cells thought the mechanism of it is not completely clear.
