Influence of the Selected Fish on the n3 Fatty Acids Intake in Diet of Individuals with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Summary: Purpose: The aim of the study was analysis of the influence of the fish consumption on the n3 fatty acids intake from fish in diet of individuals with age-related macular degeneration.
Materials and Methods: The object of conducted analysis were 127 nutrition questionnaires from 64 individuals with AMD (44 females, 20 males) and 63 without AMD – control group (49 females, 14 males). The age of participants was 50–88. The nutrition questionnaire concerned: consumption of fish and n3 fatty acids supplementation. n3 fatty acids intake was assessed based on most often consumed fish and n3 fatty acids content in typical servings.
Results: AMD and control group consumed fish once a week and was characterized by n3 fatty acids intake of 0.25 g daily. Most often chosen species of fish were: cod, herring, salmon and mackerel. Frequency of fish consumption was correlated with n3 fatty acids intake. n3 fatty acids content in the typical serving of fish was increased by choosing species most high in this nutrient (herring, salmon, mackerel, pilchard), and was decreased by choosing species low in it – cod, halibut.
Conclusions: Quantity of fish servings and diversity of chosen fish were similar in AMD and control group. n3 daily fatty acids intake from diet was comparable in both groups. n3 fatty acids intake may be increased by choosing species most high in this nutrient and higher frequency of their consumption.
