Effect of 0.1% Diclofenac Ophthalmic Solution on Inflammatory Response and Macula Following Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery – Preliminary Report

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of 0,1% diclofenac sodium ophthalmic solution (Dicloabak) as adjunctive therapy with loteprednol on postoperative intensity of inflammation in the anterior chamber and on foveal and perifoveal retinal thickness. 36 eyes of 36 patients (22 females and 14 males) aged 47 to 87 years (av. 67 years) qualified to cataract extraction (phacoemulsification with IOL implantation) were included in this prospective randomized study. Patients were divided into 2 groups (according to the treatment options): group I (D+L) – 0.1% Dicloabak with ophthalmic steroid (0.5% loteprednol etabonate) and group II (L) – monotherapy with ophthalmic steroid (0.5% loteprednol etabonate).
Analysis of BCVA (Snellen charts), intraocular pressure (mmHg), laser flare-cell photometry value in anterior chamber inflammation (ph/ms) and foveal and perifoveal thickness (µm) was performed.
Analysis of group treated with 0.1% Dicloabak with ophthalmic steroid showed faster decrease tendency of laser flare-cell photometry value comparing to group treated with ophthalmic steroid only. Statistically significant increase in perifoveal (Ø 6 mm) and foveal (Ø 1 mm) thickness in OCT following phacoemulsification was observed in group II comparing to group I.
