Regression of Macular Neovascular and Exudative Changes in Age-related Macular Degeneration after Single Aflibercept Injection – Own Experience

Summary: Purpose:To present cases of rapid regression of neovascular and exudative changes in macula in the course of age-related macular degeneration after single intravitreal aflibercept injection.
Material and Methods: In article cases of 3 female patients with exudative type of age-related macular degeneration are presented and discussed. Because of the neovascular choroid membrane presence, patients were qualified to intravitreal 2.0 mg/0.05 ml aflibercept injection. Patients during qualification and follow-up visits had complete ophthalmic examination (visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, anterior segment and fundus assessment) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography examination.
Results: In all patients after single aflibercept injection visual acuitity improvement, regression of retinal and choroid changes seen both in clinical (reduction of exudative and oedematic changes) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography examination (reduction of retinal thickness) were observed.
Conclusions: Intravitreal injection of therapeutic dose of aflibercept in selected cases of subretinal neovascularization due to age-related macular degeneration, can rapidly, after single drug administration, lead to improvement in functional and objective morphological parameters assessed using spectral domain optical coherence tomography.
