Patients Expectations Qualified for Senile Cataract Extraction From Medical Staff of the Department of Ophthalmology

Summary: Purpose: The analysis of expectations of patients hospitalized due to a senile cataract extraction from medical personnel of the ophthalmology department.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted among 50 patients (25 women and 25 men) hospitalized in two ophthalmology departments in Lodz. The study used questionnaire constructed for the purpose of this survey; the Patient Request Form; the Feeling Stress Questionnaire.
Results: Before ophthalmological surgery patients expect informative support from the personnel of the ophthalmology department: from an ophthalmologist – information on the diseases and from a nurse – information on the course of treatment and examinations. The patient’s age, gender, marital status and feeling of stress have an influence on his expectations.
Discussion: The analysis of patients’ expectations is an important factor which is needed to provide proper quality of the medical care. The fulfillment of these expectations allows to make a global evaluation of the treatment process and the medical centre in which the patient has been treated.
Conclusions: 1. Patients awaiting a surgery for senile cataract have different expectations from medical doctors and nurses concerning informative support. 2. Elderly patients expect individualized but also comprehensive ophthalmological care; they need emotional support provided by professional psychologists. 3. The care provided in an ophthalmology department before senile cataract extraction should be interdisciplinary.
